Learning to drive next to the Sabzi Mandi

The market end of I-11 is the densest traffic in the I-series and it behaves differently from anywhere else in Islamabad. Loaders reverse without warning, rickshaws use gaps you would not call gaps, vehicles double-park on both sides at once, and pedestrians cross wherever they are standing. Lane markings stop meaning very much.

It is not where anyone should hold a first lesson. It is, however, exactly the traffic most I-11 residents drive in every week, so a course that avoids it has not finished the job.

Quiet first, then the hard part

Lessons start in the residential blocks of I-11/1 to I-11/4, where the roads are ordinary and calm. Controls, observation and lane position are built there first.

When you are steady, we move towards the market deliberately and in stages — approach roads first, then the congested stretches. The skill we are after is not speed. It is reading what other road users are about to do, holding your nerve, and being predictable yourself so that everyone else can read you.

Peshawar Mor and the Kashmir Highway

The other half of driving in I-11 is the opposite problem: getting onto a fast road and staying calm on it. Merging from a slip road, holding a lane, and judging the speed of traffic already moving are practised once the congested work is comfortable. Handling both ends of that range — stop-start market traffic and open-road speed — is what makes a complete driver.

Your Islamabad driving licence

An I-11 address means an ICT licence through Islamabad Traffic Police. We confirm the authority from your CNIC address before you start, walk you through the learner permit, and prepare you for the practical test.
