E Tag Islamabad: Registration, Application, and Charges (2026)

E Tag has become an important topic for auto owners nowadays in Pakistan, especially in major cities like Islamabad. The full form of E-Tag refers to Electronic Tag. It represents a digital identification system used to link a vehicle with a toll account or database entry.

Regarding the E-Tag, the primary advantage for beginners is that it prevents the intimidation and stress of being pulled over at security checkpoints, as the digital scanners verify your vehicle automatically and allow you to pass through without police interaction as a new learner.

What Is an E Tag?

An E Tag (Electronic Tag) is a small electronic sticker or device attached to a vehicle that enables automatic identification and toll payment. It works by using radio-frequency or camera-based technology. It allows vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping. In Pakistan, this term is commonly used to refer to electronic toll tags used for motorway and city road systems.

How and Why Is E Tag Used For a Car?

For cars, an e tag acts as a vehicle identity linked to toll systems. When a tagged car passes a toll plaza or checkpoint, the system reads the tag and automatically deducts charges or verifies access. In short, the benefit of using an e tag is to save both time and effort.

Key Benefits:

Enable cashless toll payments

  • Improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and long queues at toll points
  • Speed up vehicle movement at toll plazas
  • Easy and accurate vehicle record-keeping for your safety
  • Reduce human error in toll collection and improve transparency
  • Support smart city and motorway infrastructure

As traffic volumes grow, manual toll systems become inefficient, making e tags essential. In short, e tags make road travel more efficient, organized, and safe.

The Process of E Tag Usage

The process of e tag usage is simple:

  • Vehicle approaches toll lane.
  • The system scans the e tag.
  • The toll amount is deducted.
  • The barrier opens automatically; no manual interaction is required.

E Tag vs. M-TAG: Are They the Same?

This is one of the most common questions. In practice, many people use the term e tag to refer to M-TAG. While they are not globally identical, in Pakistan they serve the same purpose for motorway tolling.

ETag: A general term for electronic vehicle tags.
M-TAG: Pakistan’s official motorway toll tag system.

Note: Vehicles already equipped with the national M-Tag are generally recognized by the system and do not require a separate E-Tag. If you don’t have an M-Tag, you must get the E-Tag at a designated center to avoid fines or restricted entry into Islamabad.

The 2026 Enforcement Deadline

As of January 2026, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has set a final deadline. After January 15, 2026, no vehicle without a valid E-Tag/M-Tag will be allowed to enter Islamabad. This measure is part of the "Safe City" initiative to enhance security and traffic flow.

This legal rule is that since January 2026, the Islamabad administration has enforced a "No Tag, No Entry" policy at all 12 city entry points to enhance security and digital monitoring.

1. Preparation: What You Need

Before heading out, ensure you have these two essential documents. Without them, the registration staff will not be able to process your application:

Original CNIC: The identity card of the person registering (does not necessarily have to be the owner in all cases, but the owner's details are preferred).
Original Vehicle Registration Card/Book: Or the Smart Card. The system needs to scan the vehicle's chassis number and registration details.
A Mobile Phone: You will receive a verification code (OTP) on your SIM during the process.

2. Where to Get Your E-Tag in Islamabad

As of January 2026, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has established several registration points across the city. There are currently 15 to 16 active registration centers across the capital. Most fixed locations operate from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, while the Excise Office follows a specific afternoon schedule.

3. The Physical Application Process

Getting your E-Tag (or M-Tag) in Islamabad is a straightforward process, but it does require a physical visit for the actual installation. Since the January 15, 2026 deadline is approaching, follow these steps:

Step 1: Visit a Registration Point

Go to any of the 16 designated booths. Tip: Avoid the 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM rush; early mornings or late evenings are usually faster.

Step 2: Vehicle Inspection

A staff member will verify your vehicle's physical details (Number plate and Chassis number).

Step 3: Data Entry

The operator will enter your CNIC and vehicle number into the One Network or Safe City database. You will receive an SMS confirmation.

Step 4: Tag Affixation

A specialized RFID sticker will be pasted on the top-center or top-left of your windshield (inside). Note: Do not try to peel it off or move it later, as the internal chip is fragile and will break.

Step 5: Activation & Initial Payment

The registration and sticker fee is approximately Rs. 250. You will be asked to load an initial balance (usually Rs. 300–500) to activate the tag.

4. The Online Application Process

While full registration cannot be done entirely online without a vehicle visit, the "online" part refers to digital profile creation and account management.

Step 1: Digital Pre-Registration (Optional)

Download the App: Install the "M-Tag One Network" app (Google Play / Apple App Store).
Sign Up: Enter your CNIC, Mobile Number, and Name.
Add Vehicle: Enter your vehicle registration number to create a "pending" profile.

Step 2: Physical Verification & Tagging

Take your vehicle to a registration point. The official will scan the chassis, verify your documents, and link the physical sticker to your digital profile.

Step 3: Online Activation & Payment

After the tag is pasted, you handle all payments and management online via the One Network App. Your vehicle will now show as "Active."

Important: The "City Islamabad" App

If you are an Islamabad resident, the City Islamabad App also offers a "Mobile Registration" request feature where you can request a Mobile Van to come to your location. You can also pay your Vehicle Token Tax through this app.

E Tag Points and Penalties

E-Tag points generally refer to the electronic demerit point system linked with traffic violations. Points are digitally recorded against a driver’s record when traffic laws are broken (e.g., speeding, reckless driving, or lane violations).

The purpose is to monitor driving behavior and improve road safety. If a driver accumulates too many points, penalties can include:

  • Heavier fines
  • Temporary license suspension
  • Mandatory driving training or license cancellation

FAQs

What is the difference between M-TAG and E-Tag in Pakistan?

M-TAG is the official motorway toll tag issued by One Network/FWO for use on national motorways, while E-Tag is a broader term used for electronic vehicle identification systems. In practical terms, both serve the same purpose in Pakistan and operate through the same toll infrastructure.

Is an E-Tag created automatically or does it require registration?

An E-Tag is not generated automatically. It requires formal registration, vehicle verification, and physical installation of the RFID tag at an authorized registration point.

How are E-Tag toll charges calculated?

Toll charges are calculated based on vehicle category, route distance, and the officially approved motorway toll rates. The system deducts the applicable amount automatically when the vehicle exits the toll section.

Final Thoughts

The E-Tag system is no longer optional for those living in or visiting Islamabad. By using the online portals for recharge and registration, you can avoid the heavy fines and entry bans that take effect after January 15.
